Bob Lee Swagger (Wahlberg - in a role that doesn't require him to smile or make jokes, so its all good) is a retired sniper who was left for dead in Ethiopia while on a covert-ops mission, in which his partner was killed. He is tracked down by Colonel Isaac Johnson (Danny Glover) who is in need of an expert as they have intel that an assassination will be attempted on the President by way of a sniper.
Swagger comes up with the goods but is double-crossed by Johnson and framed for the attempted assassination, if caught he will be guilty of treason and sent to Death Row.  Without a one-armed man to blame, he'd better get running.

So, how does it end?

Swagger and the FBI agent, Memphis, find out where the Russian is hiding and plan an attack on his cabin.  Memphis is taken to sniper-school, and Swagger does a "Commando" old-school format of easily killing every guard he meets to reach the enemy.  It's amazing how many times that movie comes up.
He learns that the Russian is just a pawn, and was a famous marksman himself many years ago, used by Johnson for his dark deeds. The Arch-Bishop was killed on purpose, as he was about to tell the President that Johnson and the Senator killed an entire village of 400 people in Ethiopia just to build an oil pipeline.  The Russian takes his own life and the army of soldiers arrive, and Swagger makes it back out with the help of a bit of napalm.

Swagger agrees to meet Johnson - and exchange Sarah for a recording of the Russian telling them the reason for the assassination. They choose a snow-covered mountain top, only accessible by helicopter it seems. Memphis, pretending to be Swagger, approaches and is shot by a sniper. Swagger, hiding, then takes out the remaining snipers - and the arm of the bad guy holding Sarah. Sarah picks up a gun and shoots the evil guy several times in the chest for what he did to her before.  Memphis is fine - he was wearing heavy-duty body armor.
The FBI are about to show up. The Senator leaves in his chopper. Swagger burns the recording - for reasons I have no idea, and make no sense to anyone else there either.

Back at FBI HQ later, Swagger enters the room in convict clothing. Around the table are Memphis, Sarah, a District Attorney and Johnson. Swagger proves his innocence as the sniper rifle couldn't have been fired - he removed the firing pins before he left his home.  Johnson owns up, but leaves the room as he claims he is untouchable.
The DA leans towards Swagger and tells him that Johnson is right, but implies that in life some people are better off dead. Swagger is released.

Later, Johnson, the Senator and his men are relaxing in a cabin at night, smoking cigars around the fire and laughing.  Suddenly Swagger shows up and starts shooting everyone up.  Johnson is one of the first to go by sniper shot to his throat, but the death is too easy and he didn't even suffer to be fair.  At the end, the Senator is the only one alive, begs for his life, but Swagger shoots him in the head.  He puts the gun in Johnson's hand, strikes off a gas pipe and the cabin explodes as he exits.
He then gets into a car with Sarah, and they drive off into the distance.

Is Danny Glover's effort here amongst the 'top 10 worst acting performances of all time'??  That scene near the end when they are sat around the table and he tells them he doesn't need to listen?  Wow.  Bad.  So, so, bad.  But don't worry Danny, there'll be a Leathal Weapon 7 waiting around the corner to keep you in work.
