LAPD hostage negotiator Jeff Talley (Bruce Willis) loses his love for the job when a madman shoots his own family after a 16-hr negotiation fails. Haunted by the memories, he takes a post as a small town police chief away from the big city - but one year later he must use his skills again when three young criminals break into a mansion and hold the rich owner's family hostage. Problem is, they are not the only people that are after the mansion's contents - and a ruthless gang will stop at nothing to get their hands on a precious DVD locked away inside.

So, how does it end?

Willis gets into the mansion compound to get them all out safely with a chopper hovering overhead. He tells the older criminal brother that he didn't kill the homeowner, so things aren't as bad as he thinks, but then Mars (Ben Foster) shows up with a gun to little Jennifer's head and forces them all back inside.
Talley's chief drops him from the case, only for a SWAT team to enter the scene and put Willis back in charge. It's soon obvious that the SWAT team are the bad guys.
Meanwhile Mars starts to crack up. First he pushes the younger brother crim over the balcony to his death, and then shoots dead the older brother as he sits devastated next to the body.
Meanwhile the young kid Tommy is on the phone to Talley and gets around the house using the air conditioning shafts. He frees his sister but they are chased by a crazy, dejected Mars. They make it to the panic room. Mars loses it, and writes "Burn it" on the glass, referring to the girl's t-shirt. He then sets fire to the house.
Willis breaks into the mansion. Mars comes running out with a few Molotov cocktails, but stops when he sees Jennifer dressed like the Virgin Mary, and decides to take his own life.

Willis and the kids make it out safely. The blackmailers are furious as the DVD case with all the secrets will have burned - but Bruce tells them that the rich guy is still alive. They arrange a transfer, and it seems the homeowner Walter Smith is associated with the bad guys.
They go to a dark, uninhabited restaurant somewhere out of town and the masked gunmen prepare to murder poor Talley. The rich guy takes a gun, giving orders to the blackmailers, but just to get close to the leader. Walter takes him out with a bullet to the head, and Bruce shoots the rest of them dead. He then finds his wife and daughter tied up in the corner, but still alive.
