It's 1757 and the British are at war against the French for control of the Northern American colonies.  Led into a trap by a scout named Magua (Wes Studi), an English platoon are slaughtered by native Indians until Hawkeye (Daniel Day-Lewis) and two remaining Mohicans (his adopted father and brother) bound onto the scene to save the last remaining members - a Major and the daughters of an English Colonel (Madeleine Stowe and Jodhi May).
They take on the challenge to escort the three liabilities to the English controlled fort a short distance away, which is under attack by the French, yet Magua is close behind and has a plan to get-even with the English Colonel  (without Oprah and daytime tv he's been unable to move on from his feelings of anger and betrayal which have been building up for quite some time).

So, how does it end?

After the waterfall scene, Hawkeye enters the Huron camp to trade his life for the captured Cora (and, at a stretch, her sister too) - but Duncan is overcome with bravery and sacrifices himself instead.  Magua and his men lead Alice away - nobody seems to really want her - but are soon caught-up by the 'crazy in love' younger bro Uncas.  He's a terrible fighter and Magua soon throws him off a cliff.  Alice, with scary wide eyes, then also decides to jump off that same cliff.

The step-father and son Mohican tag-team race on the scene -- and Chingachgook is one mean and angry Indian.  They decimate the war party, and then with a few nifty forward-rolls and the help of his giant club/sword/axe the old man beats the living daylights out of Magua - then shakes his head in a way only disappointed fathers can do, and then bats the point through Wes Studi's stomach.  The remaining bad guys carefully shuffle away, and old Chin says a little poem and moans about being the Last of the Mohicans.
