Tag-line The greatest manhunt in history.

Plot:

The Hunt for Osama Bin Laden. Zero Dark Thirty details the 10 year hunt for Bin Laden and efforts by the CIA counter-intelligence teams to find the man responsible for the 9/11 attacks and bring him to justice.

So, how does it end?

When all hope seems lost, and Maya has lost more friends in terrorist attacks, suddenly she has a thought - the courier she thought would lead them straight to Bin Laden might not be dead after all. The detainee who swore he buried that man, in fact, may well have buried one of his brothers, who all look alike.

They bribe an official from Kuwait to track phone calls to the courier's mother. They soon pick up a repeat caller that they identify as the courier, and the teams head to Pakistan to track him.  He is a professional and travels on a random route for each pickup and doesn't follow any set plans to avoid being traced, but the security team finally track him down and can follow him to his fortified home.

They run surveillance on the property where they find a compound holding what looks like 3 families - and one male who never shows himself in public and hides behind a huge wall enclosure.

Maya is determined that Bin Laden is the undisclosed male and urges her boss to take action. He needs more proof and slowly plays the political game, as every morning she storms down to his office and scribbles in marker pen on his window the number of days since they knew where he was.

Finally, after 100 days, they hold a meeting with the Director of the CIA. While others at the table give their reservations, Maya is adamant that Bin Laden is in the complex.

She gets her wish and a Navy Seals team is on board and briefed. In May 2011 they board state-of-the-art choppers to fly under the radar to Pakistan where they mount the raid.

They split into teams to break into the complex, but one of the choppers suffers a malfunction and goes down. The Seals make it out unharmed, but their plan to get in unnoticed is not going so well.

Then with a few flash-bangs and door charges, the inhabitants slowly stumble out of bed it seems to see what all the commotion, when most people would be calling in the artillery.

Anyway, the Seals despatch the courier, then the other males, and anyone who gets in the way, before heading to the top floor.

One of the soldiers calls out 'Osama'. Osama seems curious and pokes his head out the door, with his AK-47, and is gunned down.

The teams try to salvage what they can from the compound, as irate locals look to fight the Americans. All remaining hostages are tagged and pushed onto choppers, and get out unharmed.

Back at base, Maya waits nervously. The body bag holding 'Geronimo' is laid out on a table. Maya walks towards it, opens it, then confirms that 'the target' has been killed.

The end credits honor all those who died as a result of the terrorist attacks.

Comments

The others tell the CIA Director that Maya is smart - so after the meeting he meets her in the canteen. He asks what she has done since joining these last 12 years except look for Bin Laden ... and she tells him she has done nothing else. And that seems to please him.

What?!?!  With all the billions spent in the chase, and all the resources at her disposal, all she did for 12 years was torture the odd guy, then chase one single lead that (very luckily) paid off.  Please.  She can't be that smart.  There must have been the odd Netflix marathon and few games of minesweeper played in that time to waste away the days.  Give anyone else a few $billion pocket money to find (bribe) a few answers, and the luxury to work 9-5 on that one case from anywhere they like in the world (closer to the action the better), and they could have done it in half the time.
