Plot:

Up in the snow-capped Rockies, a team of bounty-hunters led by one man with an axe to grind (Neeson) chase an injured Army General (Brosnan) through the harsh terrain, but they didn't count on the resourcefulness of the General who evades them - and manages to slowly even the numbers through a series of traps he lays for his pursuers.

So, how does it end?

Gideon is still hunted across the Rockies and into Nevada, while Carver's crew is a little lighter leaving just Hayes and Parsons left.

Gideon stumbles into three bank robbers, who fortunately have heard that he was a General not-to-be-messed-with.  He asks them to go their own way, but one of them wants to tie up the loose end and follows him. Keeping his gun aimed at Gideon, he asks him to turn around -- and Gideon dispatches his trusty knife at distance into the man's throat.

Carver's crew follow Gideon's crew and find the body. Parsons prefers to take the guaranteed bounty on the dead man than risk his life to follow Carver for $1/day. Carver shoots his horse, to make him earn his money and they leave him behind.

Using the bank robber's horse, Gideon approaches a work camp building a new railroad - who take him prisoner to claim a bounty when they see that he is riding on a stolen horse. He escapes just in time before Carver gets into the camp.

Still on his trail, Carver and Hayes pass the religious settlers, and decide to join them for the night. In the morning, with Hayes hung over, they find that their bullets have been stolen.  Meanwhile Gideon has pushed his horse hard, who collapses with exhaustion.

Carver and Hayes approach the dead horse - when out jumps Gideon from hiding in its belly 'Empire Strikes Back' style(!) and quickly grabs Hayes.  Carver shoots Hayes hoping to harm his enemy, but just ends up killing his man.

Carver and Gideon finally face off.  About this time we find out the truth about what happened at Seraphim Falls…

---

Carver was a retired Civil War Army officer who was hunted by Gideon and his men, who tracked him to his home. His men searched the house, before they set fire to it.  His wife suddenly screams because their baby was still inside and goes to rescue him, while Carver's little boy chases after his mother -- and they die in the fire.  Carver fights with Gideon's men but is beaten unconscious.  Gideon is furious with his men who told him that the house was empty, and is sick with the guilt.

---

They both can't bring themselves to finish the other one off. Carver is knocked unconscious and Gideon stumbles away across the desert.

Carver picks himself up and again gives chase.

Gideon soon finds himself in an Oasis where he finds Wes Studi (!) who charges him the pistol in his hands in exchange for a drink.  Later Carver finds himself at the same oasis where he is given the gun … and has a drink.

Next Gideon is stopped by Madame Louise (Anjelica Huston) who gets in his way and takes his horse.  When Carver is next to stop her way he does a little exchange and continues the chase.

Before long they catch each other and open fire … Carver is hit in the side. Gideon apologises for what happened at Seraphim Falls, and rather than finish him off his stabs his knife into the sand. Carver gets to his feet and drops his gun, then they both wander off randomly in different directions.
