While enjoying a tea party with the girls, Miss Hattie calls round after an anonymous call and a background check on Gru, to take the girls back to the orphanage. Dr Nefario tells him that they can now finally get back on track with their true mission.
It's a full moon. Gru blasts off in a rocket, launched Thunderbirds style from beneath his front lawn, and approaches the moon. He floats into space with the shrink ray, and zaps the moon. He holds it in his hand -- but notices a ticket for the girls' dance recital that was in his pocket.
He quickly gets back into the rocket, thinking he can make it on time, and crashes down to earth, smashing into the street outside the dance hall. He runs inside - but it's too late and everyone has left. On the reserved seat he finds a note - signed Vector.
Gru gets over to Vector's lair and hands over the moon in exchange for the girls ... but Vector changes the rules. An angry Gru easily forces his way inside, destroying the missile defences, and knocking out the shark. Vector and the girls escape in a shuttle - but Gru manages to climb the Pyramid and hang on.
He slips - but Nefario is there to catch him in Gru's flying machine. They chase Vector, but suddenly the moon starts to expand. Vector can't control the ship. Gru gets closer, and the girls are rescued one at a time. Margo is last and is too scared to jump. Gru promises he will catch her. She jumps but misses Gru. Gru dives to catch her, caught by his army of minions.
Meanwhile Vector catches the booster rockets and launches off into space. The moon expands into its original size, destroying his ship. Vector is left stranded on the moon.
Gru, Nefario and the minions gather for a special dance recital by the girls. Finally, his mother is proud of him. He is encouraged to get up on the stage by the girls, and shows us all his 70s dancing moves!
