In the struggle both Frodo and Gollum (holding the ring) fall off the ledge. Gollum is destroyed in the lava but Frodo is hanging on. Sam runs to Frodo and pulls him up just as the ring is destroyed and the volcano explodes. Sam and Frodo are trapped on a large rock with lava and all hope for them is gone as Middle Earth is saved. The Great Eye crumbles and the floor opens, engulfing many of the army of Mordor (the rest run away) but Aragon and the men are safe. A tearful goodbye follows and Frodo gives Sam Bilbo's book, whithin it "a hobbit's tale" by Bilbo and "the lord of the rings" by Frodo, and there is space enough for Sam to have more adventures. The 3 hobbits return home and the film ends with Sam returning home to his wife and two children - happy and safe.
