Dormer cracks the case and figures out that Walter Finch, the writer, is the "Brody" who the murdered teen was seeing. At his apartment he finds a little more clues before Finch returns and there's a big chase scene which ends when Will falls off some rolling logs into the water.
So Finch keeps bugging Dormer with phone calls, until they meet to discuss a plan to work things out together - to frame the murdered girl's ex-boyfriend Randy and in return Finch won't tell the authorities about the shooting. Finch has recorded the conversation to protect himself.
Soon the Alaskan PD catch up with Finch and bring him in for questioning, and the clues now point towards Randy. Dormer gets to Randy's place first but the Alaskan PD find the gun and Randy is taken away.
Burr (Hilary Swank) has basically figured a few things out and travels over to Finch's summer cabin to pick up letters to prove his innocence when she finds the murdered girl's dress. She is knocked unconscious but Dormer turns up in time. Dormer can't allow Finch to murder her so there's a big fight where Will is kicked all over the shop by an angry Robin Williams.
Burr breaks them apart but Finch gets over to an outhouse where he picks up a shotgun.
This time Dormer uses the undergound water passage to sneak up on the bad guy and they shoot each other at the same time. Finch falls into the water dead before he disappears for good.
Burr tells a dying Dormer that she doesn't need to tell the authorities that she found a second bullet - but Will wants Burr to keep her integrity, before he too bites the bullet.
