Plot:

Kate Beckinsale (as US Marshall Carrie Stetko) is stationed at an army/scientist base in Antarctica a long way from her previous post in Miami (that will be slowly revealed in various flashbacks).  Just before the season ends and the 'Whiteout' storms come on the scene, she investigates the murder of a scientist - the first homicide ever on the ice lands (or so the movie says).
While following a call to the dead guy's base to talk to his nerdy frightened buddy, she finds the mystery caller lying on his sofa trying his best to keep the blood back inside his neck ... and a killer in the room complete with dark snow-outfit, black ski goggles and pick-axe.  She is chased, escapes but loses two fingers to frostbite ... and on the deserted killer's base (with just her pilot) crosses paths with a suspicious UN agent (Gabriel Macht) who doesn't seem to have any means of arriving there. She now she 3 days to bust the case and get out before she is trapped in the coldest place on earth for the winter...with the killer.

So, how does it end?

So the flashbacks reveal that her ex-partner double-crossed her while in Miami, and let the fugitive they had chained up in their hotel room escape and try to kill her.  She didn't learn her lesson.
The UN agent is a constant red-herring, but to make that more believable there are a load of mistakes and strange murderous stares you'll have to ignore.
After they check the flight manifests and work out that the frustrated ski-murderer is the Aussie pilot that ran around naked earlier, they chain him up in the main base but miss the last flight out before the 'whiteout'.
So the killer is released/escapes and tries to get his plane ready.  The murderer and Beckinsale have a fight outside, and he is whipped out into the storm when the guiderope he was leaning on breaks.
Following a hunch from the handiwork on her damaged hand, she returns to the morgue and sees the doctor's nifty little knitting on the dead man's stitches (Tom Skerritt's come a long way since Top Gun).  Weirdly, he doesn't complain, accepts that he was wrong ... and just walks out into the storm.  But we don't hold any bad feelings as he told Maverick that he'd 'be his wing-man anytime' back in the day.
Becks, the red herring and the injured other pilot from before are picked up 6 months later when the sun is out - and it seems they've had a whale of a time with a bit of indoor-corridor bowling.
