Tag-line He's having the worst day of his life... over, and over...

Plot:

Each year in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania a huge crowd gathers to wake up Phil the Groundhog to find out if, according to legend, there will be 6 more weeks of winter if Phil is scared of his shadow.
Phil Connors (Bill Murray) is a bitter TV weatherman who is hoping for the big time and a proper anchor position, and is resentful that he is required to cover this event each year. With his new producer Rita (Andie MacDowell) and cameraman Larry (Chris Elliott) they travel to Punxsutawney to prepare for a forgettable day - made worse by an annoying salesman, small town hospitality that irritates Phil and a blizzard that has blocked all roads out of town.
Problem is - when he wakes up the next morning - he finds that it is Groundhog Day all over again...

So, how does it end?

After Phil's epiphany, he turns his life around - he furthers his education, skills and general knowledge, while using his time each day to help other people - including catching a boy who falls from a tree, fixing Felix's back problem, changing the old lady's tyre and helping the old man who was destined to die that day.

Staying in town with the rest of the townspeople to wait out the blizzard, Phil plays a piano masterpiece at a charity fundraiser event to (unknowingly) attract the attention of Rita. Isn't it always the same - after trying everything else imaginable for hundreds of days, he doesn't even know what works!  At a bachelor auction, the crowd goes wild for Phil - but Rita ends up winning with a huge bid.
Larry jumps to the stage hoping for a similar result, but is bought by an old granny for 'two bits'!
Phil chisels an exceptional ice-sculpture bust of Rita before they return to the hotel room.

"I Got You Babe" plays again on the radio. Phil opens his eyes. Suddenly a hand reaches across to switch off the radio. Phil can't believe it and pinches Rita. He is overcome with every expression imaginable - Rita just asks why he wasn't like that last night!
Phil looks out the window - and the day doesn't have the usual Groundhog crowds, and the guys on the radio apologise for replaying the same wake-up song from 'yesterday'.

Going outside, they both decide to stay in Punxsutawney ... Phil wants to rent first!

Notes
According to director Harold Ramis, Phil lived through that same day for a duration of about 10 years (3,600+ occurences) although only about 35 are shown in the movie. He wouldn't have aged as he woke each morning the same, without a wrinkle or scratch from the day before. The film has a phenomenal soundtrack - and the final track has been chosen for its relation to the similarly themed musical 'Brigadoon'. Apparently. Never seen it.
