Peter La Fleur (Vaughn) is the owner of the Average Joes gym - a place for self-titled (friendly) losers, and losing money hand over fist - in fact if he doesn't meet his mortgage re-payment of $50,000 soon it will be bought out by his rival - White Goodman (Stiller) of Globo Gym. When a sponsored car-wash doesn't quite meet their target, they sign-up for the American Dodgeball Association of America dodgeball contest in Las Vegas to play for the $50,000 grand prize.
With the help of previous ADAA champ Patches O'Houlihan (Rip Torn) they can't fail to win with his valuable advice about the 5 rules of dodgeball - Dodge, Dip, Duck, Dive ... and Dodge!

The Average Joes and Purple Cobra teams make it to the final, but after celebrating their semi final victory Patches is squashed by a 'luck of the Irish' casino sign and dies.
Peter retreats to his hotel room - where White is waiting to offer him a bribe - $100,000 for the deed to his gym.
The Average Joes team argue in the restaurant. Peter leaves, and on the way out tells Steve that he is not a pirate - destroying him.
Just before the final, Justin helps Amber win the cheerleading contest, kisses her, then leaves for his own tournament.
Without Steve and Peter, the Average Joe's do not have enough players and are about to forfeit. Peter is inspired by Lance Armstrong, while Steve is still awol. Peter shows up too late, but Gordon brings out the rule book and goes to the panel for a vote - with Chuck Norris giving a thumbs up for the decider!
In the game, Justin is the last man standing - but 2 quick catches later and the teams are again equal. Peter is stranded, and Kate dives to protect him. On the way off the court, she is smacked in the face by White who is cautioned. Peter is struck out, but it is by a double-fault - so it all goes to a double-fault play-off.
After the rules, Peter blindfolds himself with Patches' scarf ... and waits. Anticipating the strike.
White throws first - Peter dodges to the side and unleashes his shot that sends Goodman flying. The crowd go wild.
A treasure chest is wheeled out - At 50-1 odds to win the contest, Peter put the bribe money to better use and won $5million - enough to buy a controlling share in Globo Gym, and immediately fires White.
Kate meets Joyce, her girlfriend, at the end.
It ends with an info-mercial for Peter's new gym chain. White is watching from his home, where he has gained a couple of hundred more pounds. After the credits he sings and dances along to ""Milkshake"".
