Rock drummer Robert 'Fish' Fishman (Rainn Wilson - Dwight from The Office) is just about to hit the bigtime with his band Vesuvius when the record exec offers the band an ultimatum - get rid of the founding member and replace him with the chief's nephew, or lose the deal. Fish is devastated. For the next 20years he wastes his life away in a dead-end job, filled with anger and bitter feelings which damage his relationships with others.
When he is kicked out of his girlfriend's house, he lives with his sister and rock-fan husband where he discovers that his nephew has started a band in time for the school prom - ""A.D.D."". Unable to find a drummer, they approach Fish for this one-time gig, but he is not ready to quit just yet and has started to get a taste for the rock and roll lifestyle again!

History repeats itself and the new record exec wants Fish out the band, to be replaced by a younger model. Lining up a gig in front of 20,000 fans to open up for Vesuvius who are about to be welcomed into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, Fish refuses to play but the singer-songwriter-guitarist decides to accept the gig anyway.
Fish returns to the Chinese restaurant basement, and has no choice but to grow-up. His hair is cut short, and with the help of his brother-in-law (actually a really cool character in the movie) he gets a job at the old factory again.
Things with ADD aren't going so well. They convince the guitarist to find Fish and bring him back. They meet up and Fish decides to do the gig.
At the venue, Fish meets his old band who don't recognise him at first. But his anger has cooled towards them and its a bit of an anti-climax.
ADD rock the house, the crowd go crazy. After their set, Christina Applegate hugs a sweaty Fish, Matt on keyboards has his fan, and the bassist and singer decide to meet up later for a date. The bassist finally smiles.
Vesuvius take to the stage, but the singer drops the mic and the music skips. The crowd realise its an Ashley-Simpson style lip-sync and boo them off. They chant for A.D.D to return.
The record exec tells them not to go back on as it will make Vesuvius look bad - but the band are ready to please the fans and tell him he's fired.
They return to the stage and the crowd goes wild.
