It's happened again - John McClane has found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. One year after the Nakatomi Plaza terrorist fiasco, he is waiting at Washington's Dulles airport for his wife's plane to land when delay notices flash up across all the screens. Meanwhile, highly popular South American insurgent General Esperanza is being flown to the same airport under guard to face drug-trafficking charges and other indictments.
In the control tower, bad weather is just the start of their problems...

They find out that the terrorists are based in a church within the airport grounds, so the Special Ops team, and John, shoot straight over but trip the warning sirens. A firefight soon starts and the bad guys get away on snowmobiles - but John takes one down and chases them.
With another terrorist in his sights, he discovers that his gun is firing blanks and just manages to jump off his snowmobile before it explodes.
McClane pieces things together - and realises that the Special Ops team are involved with the terrorists.
The runway is cleared for Esperanza's plane to land, piloted by the man himself as he killed the guards before. John gets there first and smacks him, before the terrorists show up and rescue the general, and lock McClane inside alone. They shower the plane with bullets and grenades, but he escapes with the help of the ejector seat and floats away to safety.
The Special Ops team and the remaining terrorists board a new plane they have gained through demand and negotiation with the tower, but McClane hitches a ride through his reporter friend's news chopper and jumps onto the wing. He jams his winter coat into the mechanisms so they cannot lift off.
First the leader of the Special Ops team exits for the James Bond style fight we've all seen before, and is soon kicked into one of the engines. Next its the turn for Col Stuart, who is much tougher and beats up McClane - but not before John releases the fuel lever on his way off the wing. Stuart removes the coat and makes his way back inside.
McClane fires up his lighter and throws it onto the trailing line of fuel ... which ignites and quickly roars towards the plane's fuel tanks as it starts to take off - and the plane explodes.
The trail of fire acts as a row of red landing lights, so all the planes hovering ahead (and now dangerously low on fuel) can land in relative safety.
John greets Holly when she gets off the plane. The annoying cop Lorenzo tears up his parking ticket from before, after all - ""It's Christmas"", and the McClanes are chauffered on Harv's luggage carrier to the gate.
