Three hard-working men hate their new bosses. Nick (Jason Bateman) is bullied by Harken (Kevin Spacey), who tricked him into working longer hours for a promotion that he kept for himself. Kurt (Jason Sudeikis) actually liked his boss, until he died of a heart-attack leaving his coke-head son Bobby (Colin Farrell) in charge. Dale (Charlie Day) is intimidated by his boss Julia (Jennifer Aniston) and her constant sexual advances. The three are desperate and too scared to quit their jobs - so they decide to end it once and for all - and kill their bosses!

Nick, Kurt and Dale agree that the best thing they can do is kill their bosses. They go to the toughest bar in town to try and find a hitman, and meet Jamie Foxx. He drops his price from $30k to only $5 grand, and they agree to meet the next day. Foxx offers them advice - he's not a hitman but just a murder consultant. The three guys are furious, but too cowardly to do anything about it. He still has some good ideas - they must start by doing a little reconnaissance on the targets, and to really get away with it to kill each other's boss.
First they go to Bobby's house. They sneak inside and stumble on his stash of cocaine which Nick and Dale accidentally inhale. Meanwhile Kurt leaves his DNA all over Bobby's bathroom ... and toothbrush.
Next they drive over to Harken's mansion (Nick's boss). Dale is still high and stays behind to act as the lookout. Nick and Kurt look for clues inside. Kurt accidentally drops Bobby's cellphone that he stole. Outside, Harken jogs past Dale and confronts him about dropping litter on his street. Soon enough, Harken starts to go into a shock from being near to a few peanuts that Dale has. Dale jumps out the car, grabs his epipen, and repeatedly stabs him to bring him back round. The other two can see this from the mansion.
Harken's wife shows up and thanks Dale for saving her husband's life. Harken is suddenly paranoid about his wife having an affair with Dale, and Dale is chased away. They three guys meet up later, and Dale is shouted at for saving Harken's life.
The men head to the supermarket to stack up on peanuts and rat poison, before they drive off in different directions.
Kurt stakes out Julia (Dale's boss - Jennifer Aniston), who realises she is being watched and starts to eat food seductively, before he is invited into her home for sex.
Nick waits outside Bobby's home. Meanwhile Harken is searching his home for proof of his wife's affairs when he finds Bobby's phone. He grabs the address and gets into his car. Dale takes his chance to sneak inside and plant peanuts everywhere - but phones Nick to say that he can't go through with it.
Nick watches as Harken pulls up outside Bobby's house, knocks on the door and takes out a gun, shooting him dead. Harken leaves. Nick panics and pulls away - being caught on multiple traffic cameras.
The three meet again - but are surrounded by the cops and pulled in for questioning - they have the photos of Nick fleeing the crime scene. Dale uses his CSI knowledge to get them out.
After meeting Jamie Foxx again, they have a better plan - to get Harken to confess to the murder of Bobby. Fox also admits that he has never done this before - being sent down for video piracy and not murder 101.
They head back over to Harken's mansion - this time Kurt is wearing a wire. Harken's wife has planned a surprise birthday party -- yet is soon seduced by Kurt in a cupboard. Dale and Nick get an easy confession from Harken - but Kurt is not around to record it. They escape, chased by Harken in his SUV.
Harken crashes into them - and then pulls out his gun. He confesses again, but the wire hasn't worked. He shoots himself in the leg, throws the gun to Dale, and waits for the cops to arrive. The cops show up and are about to arrest the three - when the Satnav phone man chimes in and plays back the whole confession conversation. They are all arrested, but the three get off with lesser charges.
As it ends, Nick has been promoted to Harken's role, and works for a nice CEO (although he may have a dark side involving kidnapping accountants). Harken was arrested and sent down for 25-life. Kurt is back at the firm, this time with large Marge in charge.
Dale is back to work for Julia. He does a little entrapment of his own, getting the weird guy who hates the Lehman Brothers to pretend to be knocked out to hear everything, while Foxx is outside recording it. They agree a deal - no more sexual stuff and 2 weeks holiday for a honeymoon, and they won't tell the authorities.
In the credits there's a few bloopers.
