Remy is a little rat with big dreams - to be a chef. Learning his art from the great chef Gusteau, who believed that ""anyone can cook"", and using his natural ability for smell and taste, Remy ends up in Paris -- and helps an awkward kitchen helper called Linguini who badly needs to stick at a job. Will Remy become a great chef? Or will their plan be foiled by the Health Inspector?

So it's the big night where Linguini is head chef, and Anton Ego (the harsh food critic) is to be a guest. Without Remy's help there is soon chaos as Linguini cannot recreate any of his dishes - until a brave Remy walks through the doors to risk death. Linguini saves him, and tells the story to the others. The other chefs quit in disgust.
Remy's father is proud of his son's bravery, and that he was proved wrong by one nice human, so the rats are called in and together they start to prepare the meals - with Remy in charge. Linguini sticks on a pair of rollerskates to wait tables. At that moment the Health Inspector walks in - a bunch of tough rats are sent to bring him back, tie him up, and throw him in the food locker.
Colette rides past a bookshop with Gustaeu's book, and with a tear in her eye returns to the kitchen to help Remy.
Anton Ego has demanded the chef's best effort - Remy decides to give him Ratatouille. The evil ex-head chef is also in the restaurant and orders the same meal. The dish is served - and instantly brings back memories of Anton's childhood. He loves it. The ex head chef runs into the kitchen, is shocked to see all the rats, and is tied up and thrown in next to the health inspector!
Anton asks to give his compliments to the chef - Linguini replies that he wasn't the chef tonight, and if he wants to speak to the chef he will need to wait until every other guest has left. Anton waits patiently.
At the end of the night Linguini, Colette and Remy leave the kitchen and explain the story to Anton. They show him how it works in the kitchen, where Anton asks a few questions but is generally quiet.
That night Anton writes the nicest review of his life, praising Gusteau's restaurant and 'the best chef in all France'. He still believes that not everyone can cook ... but has now seen first hand that great cooks can come from anywhere.
Later, we're told they had to release the Health Inspector, so the restaurant was closed. But Linguini managed to open a new restaurant, where above Remy also opened his own restaurant called ""Ratatouille"". Anton Ego is a regular guest. Both restaurants are fully booked, and the rats regularly tell stories of the great little chef Remy.
