John McClane finds himself having the worst day of his life ... again. Suspended from NYPD, separated from Holly and now an alcoholic, McClane is mysteriously forced back into action by a deranged bomber, calling himself Simon, who wants John to play a part in his little game. If John refuses, or is late to the party, bombs will start exploding around NYC.

McClane figures it out - and follows the dump trucks into the city aqueducts rather than playing Simon's game and getting over to Yankee Stadium. John announces his arrival on the team radios, letting the bad guys know that he is on his way. Simon decides to flood the tunnels. John makes it out, of course, and with Zeus they follow the trucks to a huge tanker and jump on board.
Meanwhile the bomb is found in the school. They evacuate the kids - but it turns out to be fake anyway. The real bomb is on the tanker.
Simon captures John and Zeus, and ties them up. He throws to John a container of aspirin. Simon makes his escape with his men, and the gold. Zeus picks the locks on the handcuffs, John gets them both free and they jump from the tanker as it explodes.
With the Feds, John takes Zeus's advice and phones Holly - but suddenly hangs up when he realises that the aspirin were from Canada.
Simon and his men celebrate, but just as he is about to get jiggy with his girlfriend John and the cops show up in choppers. Simon grounds their chopper - John gets out but with just a few rounds left.
Simon, in a getaway chopper, flies by for a final pass to kill his enemy - but John shoots a neon sign suspended above electricity pylons, which falls on the chopper and sends it crashing in a ball of flames.
John can now phone Holly in peace.
