Quinn Abercromby (Christian Bale) tags along on a ""bring your son to work"" day at a major London tunnelling project which goes wrong and disturbs a hibernating dragon. Twenty years later the earth has been turned to ash and dragons rule the skies.
Quinn is the leader of a group of survivors hiding out in a north-eastern (wooh, yeah) UK castle and trying to get by from day to day until a small US army with tanks roll up to the front door led by Van Zan (McConaughey), claiming that they know how to bring the monsters down.

Van Zan is really an undercover scientist who has studied the pattern of these dragons and believes they have just one male who lives in London. Quinn doesn't want his people to follow - knowing that the dragon is vengeful and will follow their trail back to the castle.
Van Zan leaves anyway and leads his militia army towards London until they hit a roadblock. The male dragon shows up and decimates his little force. Van Zan is the only one left and is picked up by Alex in her chopper running on what must be a nuclear-power cell or something as it never needs a refill.
Meanwhile the spiteful dragon takes a daytrip away from the City and somehow finds and destroys Quinn's castle, killing most of the adults and his little pals Creedy and Ajay.
Trapped inside they are picked up by Alex and Van Zan, who says he's sorry. Quinn takes it all quite well really.
Quinn decides to confront his fear, head back to London, and kill the dragon. The only weapons they have left are 3 arrows with magnesium tipped C4, some guns and an axe.
The three heroes get in the chopper and head down to London. Luckily the dragon's lair is near the coast for them, which doesn't make much sense, and they follow underground tunnels to get into the main complex.
They each run to different corners - Van Zan gets high on a platform and fires his arrow, which explodes and causes a bit of smoke, but no major damage. He then jumps off the platform with the axe, and is swiftly eaten.
Quinn finds his lost arrow again, dives out the way of a fireball, and then shoots just as the dragon takes a deep breath. The monster explodes.
A little in the future, they are fixing a new satellite-radio tower on top of a hill in the countryside. Jared rides up on the horse and tells them that they've made contact with the French - and they're asking for the leader. Quinn says that it'll be Jared, who thankfully rides off to have a chat with Paris.
Quinn and Alex then say that they haven't seen a dragon in 3 months, and everything seems to have come up roses again.
